How to Install and Format an M.2 NVMe SSD
Learn how to safely seat an M.2 NVMe solid-state drive onto your motherboard, secure it with mounting hardware, and initialize/format the drive in Windows Disk Management.

๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Power Down and Ground the Workspace
Shut down the operating system, unplug the AC power cord from the back of the PC, and switch the PSU rocker to OFF. Press the case power button for 5 seconds to drain leftover power, then attach your anti-static strap to an unpainted metal edge of the chassis.

Locate the M.2 Slot and Remove Fasteners
Use your flashlight to locate the primary PCIe M.2 slot on the motherboard, usually located between the CPU socket and primary PCIe graphics slot. If the slot has a pre-installed metal heatsink, unscrew it with a #0 Phillips screwdriver and lift it off. Verify a brass standoff is installed in the 2280 position.

Insert the NVMe SSD into the Socket
Align the notch in the gold connector pins of the SSD with the plastic key in the M.2 motherboard slot. Slide the drive firmly into the slot at a 30-degree upward angle until the gold contact fingers are almost fully hidden inside the connector.

Fasten the Drive and Reinstall Heatsink
Gently press the elevated end of the SSD down onto the brass standoff. Fasten the tiny M.2 screw with your #0 screwdriver until snug, or reinstall the motherboard heatsink (remembering to peel off the protective plastic film from the thermal pad underneath).

Boot PC and Launch Disk Management
Close the chassis side panel, plug in power, and boot into Windows. Right-click the Windows Start button and select 'Disk Management' (or press Win+R, type 'diskmgmt.msc', and press Enter).

Initialize and Format the New Volume
In the Initialize Disk prompt, select 'GPT (GUID Partition Table)' and click OK. Right-click the black bar marked 'Unallocated' on your new disk, select 'New Simple Volume', click Next through the wizard, choose NTFS file system, label the drive, and click Finish.
