๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Precision electronics screwdriver set (Phillips/Torx)
- โ Plastic spudger and opening picks
- โ Anti-static ESD wrist strap
- โ Ultra-soft nylon detailing brush or ESD brush
- โ Microfiber cleaning cloths
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ 99% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA)
- โ Non-conductive thermal paste
- โ Lint-free optical wipes
- โ Silica gel desiccant packs
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Never attempt to power on or plug in a wet laptop; doing so will cause catastrophic short circuits on the motherboard rails.
- โข Disconnect and remove the internal lithium-ion battery immediately to eliminate residual standby voltage.
- โข Work with 99% Isopropyl Alcohol only in a well-ventilated area away from open flames or sparks.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Immediate Power Severing and External Inversion
Instantly disconnect the AC charging cable and force a hard shutdown by holding down the power button for 10 seconds. Do not attempt a graceful operating system shutdown. Prop the laptop upside down in a 'tent' V-shape on a dry towel to let excess liquid drain away from internal circuits.
- โข All LED indicator lights are completely dark.
- โข External liquid has drained out of the keyboard vents onto the towel.
- โข Plugging the charger back in to test if the device still boots.
- โข Shaking the laptop vigorously, which forces liquid deeper into internal chipsets.
Chassis Opening and Battery Disconnection
Flip the laptop onto its top cover and remove all perimeter retaining screws using the correct precision bit. Pry the bottom casing off with a plastic spudger, working gently around the snap clips. Locate the internal battery connector and pull it straight back from the motherboard socket using a non-conductive tool.
- โข Bottom cover removed exposing the logic board.
- โข Battery wiring harness fully detached from the main PCB connector.
- โข Using metal pry tools directly on the battery connector, which can spark and bridge pins.
- โข Forgetting hidden chassis screws located under rubber foot pads.
Modular Component Extraction
Unseat and remove the RAM modules by pushing the side clips outward. Unscrew and slide out the M.2 NVMe SSD, Wi-Fi module, and CMOS coin-cell battery to prevent corrosion under their contacts. If liquid reached beneath the main logic board, unscrew and lift the motherboard out entirely.
- โข Storage drives, RAM sticks, and peripheral cards stored safely on a dry static-safe mat.
- โข Motherboard surface fully accessible for inspection.
- โข Leaving the CMOS coin-cell battery plugged in, which keeps real-time clock circuitry energized.
- โข Ripping delicate ribbon cables by pulling the board before unlatching zero-insertion-force (ZIF) connectors.
Alcohol Scrubbing and Mineral Displacement
Soak your ESD brush in 99% Isopropyl Alcohol and gently scrub all areas showing liquid residue, mineral deposits, or green/white corrosion. The high-purity alcohol will bind to moisture, displace remaining water pockets, and dissolve contaminants without conducting electricity. Thoroughly flush underneath SMD components and around surface-mounted microchips.
- โข All chalky residue and sticky deposits eliminated from the solder joints.
- โข Board surface shines clean with zero visible oxidation crust.
- โข Using 70% rubbing alcohol, which contains 30% water and will worsen corrosion.
- โข Scrubbing too aggressively and dislodging tiny surface-mount resistors or capacitors.
Complete Evaporation and Desiccation
Place the cleaned motherboard and disassembled components in a warm, dry room with continuous airflow from a fan for 24 to 48 hours. Surround the parts with sealed silica gel desiccant packs to absorb residual humidity from under dense chip packaging like the BGA CPU/GPU. Do not use raw rice, as rice starch creates a conductive, sticky slurry.
- โข Zero dampness visible under microchip packages or inside keyboard membranes.
- โข Alcohol smell has fully dissipated from the board surfaces.
- โข Using a high-heat hairdryer or heat gun, which can warp plastic connectors and melt solder.
- โข Burying components in uncooked rice, introducing corrosive dust into small ports.
Re-pasting, Assembly, and Isolated Testing
Clean old thermal paste off the CPU/GPU with lint-free wipes and IPA, then apply a pea-sized drop of fresh non-conductive thermal compound before reinstalling the heatsink. Reassemble the motherboard, storage, and RAM, but leave the battery disconnected initially. Plug in the AC adapter to perform a baseline boot test, then reconnect the battery and bottom cover once the system posts.
- โข Laptop displays boot logo and successfully loads the operating system.
- โข All keyboard keys and trackpad gestures register accurately during testing.
- โข Forgetting to replace dry thermal compound after heatsink removal, leading to immediate CPU overheating.
- โข Reinstalling the main battery before verifying the system runs cleanly on mains power.
