π Step-by-Step Guide (7 Steps)
Prep Workspace and Discharge Static
Clear a flat, non-conductive wooden or laminate surface and place the motherboard on its original anti-static box or a non-conductive mat. Clip your anti-static wrist strap to an unpainted metal section of your PC case or an ESD grounding point. Ensure adequate overhead lighting so socket alignment notches and pins are clearly visible.

Open the Motherboard Socket
Locate the metal load arm on the CPU socket. Press down gently and push it sideways out from underneath the retaining retention tab, then lift it all the way back to release the socket cover. For Intel and AMD AM5 (LGA) sockets, lift the hinged metal frame; do not manually remove the plastic protective cover yet as it will pop off automatically during closure.

Orient and Align the Processor
Hold the CPU exclusively by its outer PCB edges, keeping fingers clear of the gold contact pads or underside pins. Locate the golden alignment triangle in one corner of the CPU substrate and match it precisely to the engraved triangle marking on the motherboard socket frame. Cross-reference side alignment notches on the processor PCB with the socket's plastic indexing tabs.

Seat the CPU Using Zero Insertion Force
Hover the CPU directly over the socket opening, perfectly parallel to the motherboard. Lower the chip straight down into the socket until it rests flat without applying any downward finger pressure. Gently verify with a light touch to the edge that the CPU is seated flush without wobbling.

Lock the Retention Frame Down
Lower the metal load bracket over the integrated heat spreader, making sure the top notches catch the socket standoff screw. Press the load lever down firmly against resistance until you can swing it back under the retention hook. The plastic protective cap will pop off naturally during this motionβset it aside safely for motherboard warranty claims.

Apply Thermal Interface Material
Inspect the base of your CPU cooler; if pre-applied thermal paste is present, skip adding additional paste. If the cooler base is bare copper/aluminum, dispense a small pea-sized dot (about 4β5mm wide) of thermal paste directly in the center of the CPU integrated heat spreader. Avoid spreading it manually, as the cooler mounting pressure will distribute the compound evenly.

Mount Cooler and Connect CPU Fan Header
Align your CPU cooler bracket over the motherboard mounting holes and tighten the screws in an alternating diagonal (X-pattern) pattern to ensure even pressure across the die. Fasten screws until you meet firm mechanical resistance; do not over-torque. Locate the 4-pin header labeled 'CPU_FAN' on the motherboard and plug the cooler's fan cable securely into it.
