Prepare Workspace and Open Socket Retention Arm

Place the motherboard on a non-conductive surface, such as its original cardboard box. Push the metal retention lever down and slightly outward away from the socket to release it from its catch, then swing it upward fully into the vertical position. If working on an Intel socket, lift the hinged metal load plate upward as well.

Orient CPU Alignment Markers

Hold the CPU exclusively by its outer printed circuit board edges without touching gold pins or contact pads. Locate the tiny printed golden triangle on one corner of the CPU and match it directly with the etched triangle marking on the motherboard socket corner. On modern processors, also verify that the side alignment notches match the plastic guide keys in the socket walls.

Seat the CPU into the Socket

Lower the CPU gently straight down into the socket, perfectly parallel to the motherboard plane. Let gravity drop the CPU into place without applying any downward force or pressing down on the integrated heat spreader. Gently nudge the top edge lightly with a fingertip; the CPU should sit flush inside the socket frame with zero lateral play.

Close and Lock the Retention Mechanism

Lower the metal load plate over the seated CPU substrate until it rests flat. Press the retention lever down firmly and hook it underneath the metal retention tab. Moderate mechanical resistance is completely normal here; continue pushing until the lever clicks securely under the retention clip.

Apply Thermal Interface Material

If your CPU cooler does not have pre-applied thermal paste on its base, squeeze a small pea-sized dot (approximately 4-5 mm wide) of thermal paste directly into the center of the CPU's metallic integrated heat spreader. Alternatively, for large rectangular modern heat spreaders, apply a small central dot with four tiny dots near the corners.

Mount Cooler and Connect Fan Header

Align the CPU cooler base directly over the CPU mounting bracket holes and lower it straight down to avoid smearing paste unevenly. Fasten the mounting screws in an alternating diagonal pattern (top-left, bottom-right, top-right, bottom-left) half a turn at a time until hand-tight to ensure equal pressure. Finally, plug the cooler's 4-pin PWM fan cable onto the motherboard header labeled 'CPU_FAN'.
