๐งฐ Required Tools & Equipment
- โ Phillips #2 screwdriver
- โ Anti-static wrist strap
- โ Flashlight or magnetic work light
๐ฆ Materials & Supplies
- โ 2.5-inch SATA SSD
- โ SATA data cable (L-shaped or straight 7-pin)
- โ SATA mounting screws (M3 fine-thread screws)
- โ 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch mounting bracket (optional, depending on case)
โ ๏ธ Safety Checkpoints & Warnings
- โข Ensure the PC power supply switch is set to '0' (OFF) and the AC power cable is completely unplugged from the wall.
- โข Press and hold the PC power button for 10 seconds while unplugged to drain residual capacitor charge.
- โข Ground yourself frequently on bare unpainted metal of the chassis or wear an anti-static wrist strap to avoid ESD damage.
๐ Step-by-Step Guide (6 Steps)
Power Down and Prep the PC Case
Shut down the operating system completely. Flip the PSU toggle to '0', disconnect the main power cable from the rear, and hold the front power button for 10 seconds to discharge residual power. Unscrew the side panel thumb screws and slide off the left access panel to expose the internal components.
- โข Power cord fully disconnected from the rear PSU socket.
- โข Left side panel removed, exposing motherboard and internal drive bays.
- โข Leaving the power cord attached while working inside the case.
- โข Working on a high-static surface like shag carpet.
Locate and Prepare the Drive Bay
Locate an available 2.5-inch SSD tray, bracket, or drive cage inside the case (often behind the motherboard tray or in a bottom drive cage). Remove the mounting sled or bracket by loosening its retaining thumbscrew or depressing its release tabs. If using a 3.5-inch adapter sled, align the SSD into the adapter first.
- โข Empty SSD mounting bracket or sled removed from the PC frame and resting on the work mat.
- โข Forcing a drive sled out without releasing the locking tab or retention screw.
- โข Choosing a location too far for available SATA power cables to reach.
Fasten SSD to the Bracket or Tray
Align the four screw holes on the bottom or sides of the 2.5-inch SSD with the matching holes in the mounting bracket. Use short M3 fine-thread screws to secure the drive. Tighten all four screws in a diagonal pattern until snug, without overtightening.
- โข All four M3 screws fully seated flush against the bracket.
- โข SSD is firmly held with zero wobble inside the sled.
- โข Using coarse 6-32 case screws, which cross-thread and strip the fine M3 threads on the SSD.
- โข Mounting the SSD backward so the L-shaped connector faces a solid metal wall.
Reinstall Sled and Connect SATA Data Cable
Slot the drive tray back into the chassis and secure its retaining screw. Connect one end of the 7-pin SATA data cable to the smaller notched connector on the SSD, ensuring the 'L' shape aligns. Route the other end through cable management channels and plug it into an available SATA port on the motherboard (preferably SATA_0 or SATA_1).
- โข SATA data cable clicked firmly into the drive's 7-pin notch.
- โข Opposite end fully seated in a numbered SATA port on the motherboard.
- โข Forcing the 7-pin connector upside down, snapping the thin plastic key.
- โข Plugging into a disabled SATA port (common when certain M.2 slots are populated).
Connect SATA Power Cable
Find an unused 15-pin flat SATA power connector coming from the power supply unit. Align the wider 'L' notch of the power connector with the wider terminal on the SSD. Push the connector straight and firmly into place until it sits completely flush with the drive housing.
- โข Both the 7-pin data cable and the 15-pin power cable are plugged in flush, side by side.
- โข No gold contact pins visible on the drive's interface.
- โข Pushing the connector at an angle, which can break the drive's plastic connector tongue.
- โข Putting excessive tension on the power cable by using a connector that barely reaches.
Close Case and Verify in BIOS/OS
Reattach the side panel and secure it with the thumb screws. Plug the main power cord back into the PSU, flip the switch to '1', and boot the PC while tapping the BIOS key (Delete or F2). Confirm that the new drive model appears in the BIOS boot/storage menu, then boot to Windows/OS to initialize and format the drive via Disk Management.
- โข PC chassis completely reassembled and standing upright.
- โข BIOS setup screen showing the SSD model name and capacity in the SATA device list.
- โข Forgetting to switch the PSU back to '1' before pressing the front power button.
- โข Panicking when the drive doesn't show in File Explorer before initializing in Disk Management.

Don’t have everything?
- No Anti-static wrist strap? Touch bare metal chassis every few minutes while working on a non-carpeted surface
- No 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch mounting bracket? Case-integrated 2.5-inch drive tray or dedicated motherboard tray SSD mounting holes
